I’m Riding the Struggle Bus

If you’re wondering why You haven’t heard from me for a while, it’s because my life seems to be imploding lately, so I haven’t had a lot of time or motivation to do calm and quiet activities such as blogging. When I do have time and motivation, I usually end up painting rock. I can’t talk a lot about what’s been going on because a lot of it involves other people and their personal business. Lets just say one of my closest friends has been going through a hard time and caused a lot of chaos. Although he didn’t actually break any laws or hurt anyone, especially intentionally, he did manage to make a few people very mad. One of the angry people has no connection to my friend, only to me, and so it was me who suffered the consequences of, and was held responsible for, my friend’s actions. Meanwhile I’ve also been trying to help him put his life back together, and I’ve been trying to hold everything together within the little chosen family I’ve made for myself here. I’ve been trying ve...

Out of My Shell

The other day a friend of mine at the restaurant told me he thinks I’ve been coming out of my shell more and more since I’ve lived here. It’s been a whole new experience for me, for sure. Life has caused me to build my shell out of bricks and cement. Life has taught me that I am different, and that my differentness makes others uncomfortable, and that I should try to hide it as much as I can. I’m not great at hiding my differentness. My differences are giant parts of who I am. If I cannot be me, my only choices are try to emulate some sort of character and do what they’d do, or just be quiet and try to exist as little as possible. I did have some friends before, but with many of them it felt like the friendship was mostly about me giving them something (money, rides, free child care) or about them feeling really good about themselves for being nice to an autistic person. Living here has taught me something different. It’s given me a world where everyone is different, ...

Angel’s World

Some people have been asking me to write more about my day to day life, and so I’m going to be brave again and do it. If you want to learn what it’s like to be an autistic adult lost in the world, here’s what it is! I live on my own in an apartment in Vancouver, WA. I look a lot younger than I am, and I act much younger too, because it’s hard for me to stay still and because I’m socially and emotionally not like a typical adult. So a lot of people think I’m like Pippi Longstocking living alone and doing whatever I want… but I’m definitely old enough to be on my own! Unlike most adults though, I do need a lot of help with day to day stuff. The person who helps me the most is Chuck. He lives in this building also. He’s an older guy with kids who are around my age. I met him right around when I moved in here, and after knowing me for a little bit, he voluntarily “adopted” me and I’ve spent most of my time with him ever since! I call him my “apartment dad” or my “other dad,” and some...
